Located off the east coast of India, the Andaman & Nicobar islands are of volcanic origin. Though a part of India, the islands are quite far off from the mainland and rather nearer to the south east nations of Burma and Indonesia. This Union territory comprise of Andaman islands to north and Nicobar islands separated 10 degree N Channel.
Being close to the equator with lots of rainfall, these have large tracts of equatorial rain forests. Most of these dense forests are still unexplored. Habitation is mostly in the coastal cities.
Long back, when the British ruled India, these islands were a dread because it had the cellular jail where the freedom fighters and hard core criminals were jailed and subjected to inhuman torture. Parts of this infamous jail have been torn down but it still has some wings remaining. It is now a national museum and the tourism runs a sound and light show there in the evenings.
The islands have indigenous tribes of mongloid and negrito races. Some of these tribes are hostile and do not entertain visitors. Some tribes like Shompen have been integrated to the mainstream to an extent.
The coastline is jagged but has some beautiful beaches and lagoons. The aquatic life here is rich and tourists can snorkel under expert guidance to find out more.
